What is happening at KSU?

How can AI and automation support and optimise the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant?

Through a collaboration between KSU, Vattenfall Fleet, and Brunsbüttel (KKB), various applications of AI in decommissioning have been identified. The first phase of the project, which started with a site visit in December to identify areas of application, has now been completed. More than 50 ideas were generated based on employees’ experiences and the challenges they observe in their daily work. These ideas have since been analysed and evaluated in close dialogue with key stakeholders on site.

How do we ensure nuclear power personnel keep their skills and competencies up to date?

At KSU, we retrain nuclear power plant personnel to develop their skills and knowledge. Our retraining programmes, held every autumn and spring, combine theory with simulator-based practice. The training covers different subjects such as plant construction, operations, and handling of normal and disrupted conditions, always with a focus on safety and continuous improvement.

We have inaugurated our new graphic simulator at KSU's office in Oskarshamn. The ceremony began with a speech by project manager Anders Sandell, an instructor at KSU Oskarshamn, followed by OKG's representative Andreas Roos, Production Manager, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon. The event concluded with networking opportunities and engaging discussions to celebrate this important milestone.

Improve training with graphical simulators

Security is the top priority in any company and organisation that works with nuclear power. That also means, however, that it might not always be easy for people outside of the nuclear field to get a glimpse into what we do. At the CET conference in September, we organised a site visit to KSU's training unit in Simpevarp outside Oskarshamn and invited seventeen participants. Our Nuclear and Simulation Senior Specialist Engineer, Antanas Romas, welcomed the visitors on Thursday afternoon and introduced them to KSU's academic simulators (PSIM), Part Scope Simulator (DSIM), Severe Accident Simulator (HSIM) and Full Scope Simulator (FSS).

PRESS RELEASE 2024-03-08: Collaboration for new nuclear power and fossil freedom creates new working opportunities

The key to succeed in the ongoing energy transition is through collaboration. KSU and Blue Partner are successfully collaborating with the goal of developing a new nuclear power in Europe focused on Small Modular Reactors, SMR. KSU is known as an excellent provider of nuclear power-specific training for Vattenfall. A couple of years ago, a number of areas and courses were identified to be owned and run by KSU within 2 years. One such area was supervisor training.
