Meeting the next generation of nuclear talent – from Östhammar to Linköping

At KSU, we know that the future of Sweden’s energy landscape depends on the people who will shape it. Investing in the next generation of nuclear and energy specialists is therefore not just important, it is essential. By engaging with students, sharing our expertise and opening doors to our world of nuclear training, we hope to inspire a career in energy and especially in nuclear power.

Recently, we had the opportunity to meet and inspire students in two different settings, each offering valuable insights into how young people view their future and the energy sector.

In Östhammar, our colleagues represented KSU at Framtidskompassen, an initiative by the municipality that helps young students explore career paths and discover the opportunities available in their community. The students got the opportunity to operate an overhead crane in a VR environment presented by our colleagues from our Technology and Training Centre.

At Linköping University, thanks to an invitation from SKC, we met students interested in learning more about the future of the energy sector. We shared how KSU delivers nuclear training through advanced simulators, realistic training environments, blended learning and digital tools such as XR and 3D animations. We also discussed Sweden’s nuclear outlook including SMRs, next‑generation technologies and the central role competence development will play as Sweden invests in new nuclear power.

Across both visits, one message came through strongly: the next generation is curious, capable and motivated. By meeting them where they are, in schools, universities and local communities, we hope to strengthen the pipeline of future talent and ensure Sweden has the skills it needs for a resilient and innovative energy future.
